Garry Cobain & Brian Dougans (FSOL / Amorphous Androgynous) originally grew out of the electronic/ambient scene of the early 90’s releasing the classic Papua New Guinea in 1992. They released five albums through the nineties; Accelerator, Amorphous Androgynous – Tales of Ephidrena, Lifeforms, ISDN and Dead Cities before growing tired of the limitations and constraints of the electronic scene they had helped to create. Around this time Garry began a voyage of self-discovery that took him to India for an extended period where he studied Eastern and Ayurvedic medicine, Yoga and Taoism.
From these travels and research Brian & Garry started to get the feel for a new direction in their music. They both got into the spirit of early psychedelia and leftfield 60’s/70’s rock and saw the potential of forging these new influences with the new technology and production expertise they had acquired. The resultant album, The Isness, released under the Amorphous Androgynous moniker, was a cosmic mix of psychedelia, folk, big band, orchestral, eastern classical and electronic which also had an exotic mix of musical collaborators including Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart/Jeff Buckley), Herbie Flowers (David Bowie, Lou Reed) and revered Indian classical sitarist Baluji Shrivastav.
Now with the release of Alice In Ultraland they have focused the Amorphous Androgynous modus operandi, allowing it to exist and flourish fully on its own terms. Recorded over a three year period and expanding on The Isness’ psychedelic/electronic soundscape, it is a samplerdelic funkoid roktronic cosmic ambient oozescape, merging the sonic with the lyric, the beat with the beat-less, the classic rock with the epic freeform roll. The album careers and morphs through virtually every musical genre as it twists its way from the imaginations of Dougans & Cobain; from the Miles Davis mutoid jazz of The Witch Hunt to the electro funkadelic twist of The Prophet, the calming ambience of Another Fairy Tale Ending to the dark, epic Pink Floydisms of The World Is Full Of Plankton. This is an album full of sonic imagery and infinite possibilities.
